“Commit your way to the LORD,
Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light
And your judgment as the noonday.
~~Psalm 37:5-6~~
Last time I noted that the above verses could be broken down into statements of both MY PART and GOD’S PART. We visited “my part” last time, so let’s examine “God’s part” today.
MY PART:
- Commit my way to the LORD
- Trust also in Him
GOD’S PART:
- He will do it
- He will bring forth my righteousness as the light
- He will bring forth my judgment as the noonday
GOD’S PART
HE WILL DO IT
The phrase “He will do it” is just one word in the Hebrew language. <`Asah> is used emphatically and means, to effect, to complete, to execute anything. Let’s look at some definitions to gain more clarity.
- Emphatically: uttered with or marked by emphasis : tending to express oneself in forceful speech or to take decisive action
- To effect: to cause to come into being : to bring about often by surmounting obstacles : to accomplish : to put into operation
- To complete: to bring to an end and especially into a perfected state : to make whole or perfect : to mark the end of
- To execute: to carry out fully : put completely into effect : to make or produce (something) especially by carrying out a design : to perform what is required to give validity to
So, this phrase speaks of “HOW” God will do what He’s gonna do. He will take decisive action. He will bring it about by surmounting obstacles. He will mark the end. He will carry it out fully. There will be NO mistaking that God is in control and that He will. No doubt about it!!!
PAUSE TO PONDER what I mentioned yesterday about the status of our country. I find great comfort in this “how”. It assures me that God has a plan. And because I know that his plans and purposes can never be thwarted, nor can they ever fail, I can also know that justice and righteousness win!! The outcome is already written down and sealed, to be opened and read by the Lamb! (Revelation 5:1-5)
So we have learned so far that, when we “commit our way to the Lord” and “trust also in Him”, He will absolutely and emphatically “DO”. Now let’s look at “WHAT” He will do.
HE WILL BRING FORTH MY RIGHTEOUSNESS AS THE LIGHT
“He will bring forth” <yatsa’>: to go (causatively, bring) out, in a great variety of applications, literally and figuratively, direct and proxim; to go forth; to germinate, to expand, as a plant — in the sense of going out when speaking of men and other things.
- Direct: from point to point without deviation : by the shortest way : from the source without interruption or diversion : without an intervening agency or step
- Proxim: (proximate) situated close to : next to or nearest the point of attachment or origin, a central point, or the point of view; especially, located toward the center of the body
PAUSE TO PONDER the definitions of “direct” (from the source without interruption) and “proxim/proximate” (situated close to, located toward the center of the body) in relation to the phrase “to germinate/expand as a plant”. GOD will <yatsa’>.
Think about John 15 :4-5 — “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the Vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”.
I will only bear fruit (of righteousness) when attached to the Vine — when my heart (the “center” of me) is “directly” attached to my Source WITHOUT INTERRUPTION OR DIVERSION. This is what God will emphatically do when I “commit my way to Him and trust in Him”. Just wow…
The Hebrew word for “my righteousness” is <tsedeq>, meaning the right (natural, moral or legal); ethical rightness. With God as the Source of my righteousness, as I remain connected to Him, without interruption or diversion, the natural outgrowth of that relationship is righteousness from Him through me — Vine to Branch bears Fruit”. “As the light <‘owr> denotes illumination or a luminary.
He will bring forth MY JUDGMENT AS THE NOONDAY
<Mishpat> is the Hebrew word for “My judgment”. It means a verdict (favorable or unfavorable) pronounced judicially; especially a sentence or formal decree. As the noonday <tsohar> means a light (i.e. window); dual double light, i.e. noon:—midday. This was used in the Hebrew language as a metaphor for very great happiness.
You know, when you speak openly about what God calls right and wrong, you will surely face criticism and opposition.
I know that I have personally been called “naive” and have even been labeled “intolerant”. But Psalm 37:5-6 is teaching me that as I do my part (commit my way to the Lord and trust also in Him), He will surely do His part and eventually bring forth my righteousness as the light, and bring forth my judgment as the noonday”. I need not be concerned about when this will happen. Knowing “when” doesn’t fit with trust.
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand,
that he may lift you up in due time”,
~~1 Peter 5:6~~
“Humble yourself in the presence of the Lord,
and He will lift you up.”
~~James 4:10~~
I will do my part and He assures me He will do His.
