A Crow and Some Bluejays

I’m sitting here with the Word on my lap…coffee in my hand…feet propped up on the coffee table…just chatting with the Lord a bit before I dove into reading. I was asking Him to make His presence known to me as I spent time with Him, when I heard this fluttering real close to me. It was a young titmouse, and it landed ON MY FOOT!!!  I can’t tell you how many times God has used His creation to minister to my heart and mind. He was letting me know He is in charge of all creation and He is here, right here…with me on my back porch. Oh how I love my Abba.

So I was reading in 1 Samuel about how David was fleeing from King Saul, who wanted to kill him. I had read through a couple of chapters when this crow came squawking across the yard and landed in a tree behind our out building. There must be a blue jay nest there because what a ruckus ensued when a single blue jay called out. Blue jays came flying in from all directions to help defend the nest of their feathered friend. They ganged up on the crow and drove it away from the nest.

I sat here marveling at how God created the animals with such instinct that they come to the aid and defend one another when danger is imminent. It was then that The Spirit brought to my mind a verse I’d read a chapter or so ago. “When his brothers and his father’s household heard about it, they went down to him there.” (1 Sam. 22:1).  God connected the dots of what I’d just witnessed between the crow and the blue jays. David was in imminent danger from King Saul (the crow) and when his brothers and his father’s household heard about it (the cry of the blue jay), they went down to him there (tons of blue jays gathered to help defend the bird in duress.)  Four hundred men showed up to help David!

Wow…as I sat here mulling over all that I’d seen, I began to think of how aptly this all could apply to us as believers. What if the blue jay under attack would have reasoned, “I can handle this by myself.  I don’t need to cry out for help from other blue jays. After all, they have their own stuff to do…nests to tend, worms and bugs to eat. I don’t wanna bother them.”  That single blue jay would have had its nest ravaged by the crow.

We each go through times when the evil one assails us, whether through our thoughts or through circumstances we are going through. What do we do?  Do we reach out to other believers for support, like the blue jay did when the crow attacked? Or do we turn inward, thinking “I’ve got this…me and God…we got this?”  I can tell ya that I’ve done it both ways, and from experience, it’s so much better to do it God’s way and reach out for support from fellow believers. God’s way works.

9 Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed.
10 If one person falls, the other can reach out and help.
But someone who falls alone is in real trouble.
11 Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm.
But how can one be warm alone?
12 A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated,
but two can stand back-to-back and conquer.
Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.
~~Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NLT)~~
