“Then Asa called to the Lord his God and said, “Lord, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, Lord our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this vast army. Lord, you are our God; do not let mere mortals prevail against you.” The Lord struck down the Cushites before Asa and Judah.” (2 Chronicles 14:11-12)
God has placed before me so much teaching about prayer in the past month – from sermons, to podcasts, to books. All of that information has taught me so many things. The first of which is that there is much room for improvement in my prayer life.
As I read this short passage above this morning, God continued to teach me. Check out what He impressed upon my heart. I have inserted my comments in (italics).
“Then Asa called to the Lord his God (‘his’ God. Asa had a personal relationship with God. Without a personal and right relationship with God, you won’t be heard) and said, Lord, there is no one like you (praise as a part of prayer is so important) to help powerless against the mighty. Help us Lord our God for we rely on you (confessing utter dependence–humility is essential for “God resists the proud”) and in your name we have come against this vast army. Oh Lord you are our God do not let men prevail against You. (‘in YOUR name’…’against YOU’. Proper perspective of the situation. Asa realized that this battle was not about him, but about God).
Personal relationship.
Praise.
Petition.
Proper perspective.
What a great example to us from the prayer of a godly man. And his prayer was effective!!
“The Lord struck down the Cushites before Asa and Judah.”
