Did you ever read something in the Bible, and it just made ya go, “hmmmmm….”? Well, Psalm 11:4 did for me today.
“The Lord is in His holy temple;
the Lord’s throne is in heaven;
His eyes see; His eyelids test
the sons of mankind.”
I’ll start off with what I did understand from this verse. The fact that hit me that a throne in heaven is high and the One on the throne can see all things — God sees the big picture. (“My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are my ways your ways, says the Lord. My thoughts are higher than your thoughts and my ways than your ways”).
Now onto the “hmmmm…” part. I was unsure what the difference was between His eyes seeing and His eyelids testing. I did some digging and found that the Hebrew word for “see” (haza) means to gaze at; to mentally perceive; specifically, to have a vision of. That ties into the idea of being “high in heaven” and able to see ALL, as well as to God’s ability to mentally perceive the truth of any given person or situation. There’s no masking the “real” us before God.
“His eyelids”, (ap’apim) in Hebrew, means an eyelash (as fluttering), but was used figuratively in that language to mean a “morning ray”. Think about that! In the morning rays, things are not easily hidden, but rather clearly seen. Brings to mind how my house looks pretty clean until the sun shines in the window at just the right angle. The SON of God always shines at the just the right angle to reveal us to ourselves so we can realign ourselves to be more like Him.
The Hebrew word for “test” (bahan) means to test (especially metals); generally and figuratively it means to investigate; to scrutinize. What is coming to mind is the description of Jesus in Revelation 1:14 “His head and His hair were white like white wool, like snow; and HIS EYES WERE LIKE A FLAME OF FIRE.” In the smelting process, fire is used to test the purity of metal.
I have a tattoo on my arm that says “El Roi, the God who sees me”. It has always been a wonderful reminder that I’m not invisible to my God, even when I feel invisible to people. That’s such a comfort. But this verse we just dug into gives another aspect to God seeing me – a very sobering one. God SEES me…ALL of me.
While it’s sobering knowing God sees all of you, the real you, it is also wonderful to know that “while we were yet sinners, Jesus died for us.” God sees and God saves. All a person needs to do is come to Him, humbly admitting they could never be good enough to gain access to God apart from Jesus.
God sees. God saves. Has He saved you? If you aren’t sure, or if you know that He hasn’t yet, please reach out to me. I’d love to introduce you to the God who sees and saves.
For God says, “At just the right time, I heard you.
On the day of salvation, I helped you.”
Indeed, the “right time” is now.
Today is the day of salvation.
