The Voice of the Lord

“The voice of the LORD is on the waters;
The God of glory thunders,
The LORD is over many waters.”
~~Psalm 29:3~~

As I pondered this verse this morning, the first thing that impacted me is how, when thunder claps and lightning cracks so loudly during a storm, the sound makes you jump.  Without thought, your body just reacts. God has created us to both react to and interact with Him. I am so thankful that God’s Spirit uses His Word and His creation to reveal things that open my understanding of Him more and more.

As I studied, I came across this quote from David Guzik that I just loved. “This is the first of seven descriptions of the voice of the Lord in this chapter. Each one emphasizes the idea of the strength and authority of God expressed through His voice. The strength and authority of God’s voice is also connected to His Word. If the voice of God has such power, then the Words uttered with the voice have the same strength and authority.”

“For the Word of God is alive and active.
Sharper than any double-edged sword,
it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit,
joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts
and attitudes of the heart.”
~~Hebrews 4:12~~

We noted above how loud claps thunder makes you involuntarily jump.  Let’s take a second to consider the power of a thunderstorm from a scientific perspective.  Scientists calculate that a typical thunderstorm (not even the kind of great or major storm described here by David) releases around 10,000,000 kilowatt-hours of energy — equivalent to a 20-kiloton nuclear warhead!! That is an example of the MASSIVE power of our Lord God.  Mind blowing!!!

PAUSE TO PONDER.  In reference to the phrase, “The Lord is upon many waters”, Spurgeon writes: “It reaches OVER the vast ocean, the waters UNDER the firmament; it rattles AMONG the thick clouds, the waters ABOVE the firmament.” This brings to mind Psalm 139:7-12.

7 “Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
8 If I go up to the heavens, You are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, You are there.
9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.”

We serve a God of immense power. His Word has power and authority.  We are NEVER beyond the provision, the power, and the protection of our God.  God’s Spirit lives in us and is able to take the Word of God to teach us in a way so powerful that it gets to the very heart of us. We need to live in light of the truth that we have access to this powerful God through the blood of His Son, Jesus (Ephesians 2:18).

You know, we all face “storms” in life, whether internal battles or external circumstances.  Let’s choose to filter those “storms” through what we learned about the power and authority of God and His Word, allowing them to remind you of the massive power of our God and His Word.

Here are a few passages to meditate on and memorize.  Don’t just read them — LEARN them in order to LIVE them.

“I can do all things THROUGH HIM who gives me strength.”
~~Philippians 4:13~~

“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them,
because the one who is in you is GREATER
than the one who is in the world.“
~~1 John 4:4~~

“10 Finally, be strong IN THE LORD and in the strength of HIS might
11 Put on the whole armor
of God, that you may be able
to stand against the schemes of the devil.”
~~Ephesians 6:10-11~~
