What’s Your Spotlight On?

I had a friend reach out to me this morning and share an excerpt from a holiday-themed devotional plan she was doing.  In the devotional, the question was posed, “Where do you shine your spotlight?”

As the holidays approach, not everyone may be looking forward to them.  We all have memories.  Some good.   Others, not so much.  While some people may be looking forward to the amazing smell of a roasting turkey coming from the kitchen, there are others who may be dreading the day altogether.  Whatever you’re feeling when it comes to the upcoming holiday season, considering the question of “where do you shine your spotlight?” will be a game-changer.

My friend gave me the permission to share with you that, when she hears the word “family”, her older sister comes to her mind.  Her sister’s ways were often so hurtful.  Her sister’s words penetrated her heart and planted themselves deeply in her mind.  So because of this, when my friend thinks about her sister, her “spotlight” shines on the bad and not the good.

Thinking like that comes so naturally, doesn’t it?  God knows that we are going to experience hurt here on earth, and He so graciously provided His Word to help us navigate our emotions when we are hurting.  If you find yourself struggling to find the good in your circumstances, in your memories of the past, or in your family, open the Word of God and shine your spotlight on the truth.

  • We love because God first loved us (1 John 4:19)
  • Love one another deeply (1 Peter 4:8)
  • Be thankful (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
  • Count your blessings, not your hurts (Psalm 118:1, Ephesians 5:20, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).
  • Keep no records of wrongs done to you (1 Corinthians 13:5)
  • Get rid of bitterness (Ephesians 4:31)
  • Forgive (Colossians 3:13, Ephesians 4:32).
  • Stay hopeful and believe the best of someone (1 Corinthians 13:7, Philippians 4:8).

As you look at this list of truths, don’t shortchange yourself by just skimming it.  Grab your Bible.  Grab a journal.  Really meditate on what you’re reading.  Then talk to God about your bitterness, your burdens, and your sadness.

This holiday season, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus.  Ask God to help you love like Jesus, live like Jesus, forgive like Jesus, act like Jesus, react like Jesus.
